RainWise Program

RainWise-Eligible Work

The types of work that may qualify for RainWise rebates — and how project structure affects eligibility.

Eligibility isn't determined by the type of work alone — it's determined by how the project is structured, documented, and approved before work begins.

The RainWise program targets improvements that reduce the volume of stormwater entering Edmonton's municipal drainage system. The types of work that qualify often overlap with drainage and waterproofing improvements that homeowners need for practical reasons — not just program compliance.

Downspout Disconnection & Redirection

Redirecting roof drainage away from the municipal system and into a designated infiltration area on the property. Common requirement in RainWise-aligned projects and frequently part of a broader drainage correction.

Perimeter Drain Improvements

Upgrading or installing perimeter drainage systems to manage groundwater around the foundation. Projects structured to meet RainWise criteria require proper discharge planning.

Sump Pump Installation with Approved Discharge

Installing a sump pump where the discharge is directed appropriately — not back into the municipal sewer. RainWise projects specify discharge requirements that must be met as part of approval.

Rain Gardens & Infiltration Areas

Designed landscape features that capture and infiltrate stormwater rather than directing it to the storm sewer. Site conditions and soil type affect feasibility.

Surface Drainage Corrections

Grading or drainage corrections that redirect surface water away from the foundation. Often part of a broader project evaluated for RainWise-aligned work.

Exterior Waterproofing Where Drainage Is Involved

In some cases, exterior waterproofing work is performed alongside drainage improvements that fall within program criteria. Project structure determines whether the combined scope may qualify.

The Planning Window

Work that may be eligible must be structured and submitted for approval before it begins. Projects completed without prior approval cannot be retroactively submitted for rebate consideration, regardless of the quality of work performed.

This is the most common reason homeowners miss out on available rebates — not because the work wouldn't have qualified, but because the planning step didn't happen first.
